Open Source Tools for Geoprocessing and Cartography

This talk will introduce you to the world of open source tools for the desktop environment. Free and Open Source Tools for Geospatial (FOSS4G) have long become a viable alternative to proprietary (closed) software solutions. Since the founding of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGEO) in 2006 these solutions have become better known to a much wider community of users. Following an introduction about Open source tools and applications this talk will focus on three of the tools in more detail:

1. The Open GIS Simple Features Reference Implementation and Geospatial Data Abstraction Libraries (OGR/GDAL) and other desktop utilities to manipulate vector and raster data sources.

2. gvSIG - a powerful desktop GIS that together with the Sextante extension can be used for comprehensive GIS tasks and Image analysis. This combined gvSIG/Sextante system includes more than 220 geospatial analysis functions (for raster and vector data).

3. The open source spatial database PostGIS (based on PostgreSQL) for geoprocessing is another highly effective and powerful way to do spatial analysis. Because PostGIS exposes it’s functionality directly to SQL many tasks can be performed by simply writing spatial SQL queries or functions.
