THURSDAY AUGUST 18th, 2005 @ ANGELO’S RESTAURANT IN BELLEVUE

Attendees:  Dave George, Gary Gervelis, Jon Warren, Tim Leach, Steve Reding

WSS-ACSM Chairman Dave George opened the meeting at 7:37PM.

Jon Warren, Tim Leach and Bill Glassy showed for our July 21st dinner meeting. A small summer turn-out precluded regular minutes.  Still, the dinner meeting was lively and of course the food was excellent.

ACSM National

A motion was made to supplement the cost of Dave George’s attendance at the upcoming ACSM National Conference as President of the Washington State Section.  The motion was passed, where costs and details are to be decided at a later date.

LSAW/WSS-ACSM Christmas Party

Steve Reding is coordinating with Julie Morland to arrange the venue and setting for this year’s Christmas Party.  Those in attendance enjoyed and received positive feedback from past parties arranged at the Palisade’s Restaurant in Seattle.

WSS-ACSM Funding: Presentations and Seminars

Steve Reding reported that we did not make any money at our latest dinner, presentation meeting in June.  Although, we did enjoy a greater turn-out and that is important for our members.  We briefly discussed at least setting the dinner meeting price to offset cost, so that we could come out ahead.

Gary, Steve and Jon (through experience) indicated that one of the best ways to grow and supplement funds was through hosting seminars.  Gary mentioned an idea of hosting a seminar about “field to office operations”.  This would be a seminar that focused on ‘best practices” with reference to contemporary tools and technologies.  It would be targeted at methods to achieve required accuracies and precision for surveys through an overview of operations.

We will take this idea forward and research possibilities for hosting the seminar in both October 2005 and April 2006.  Dave suggested at least targeting April 2006.

Is a bachelor’s degree going to be a future requirement for the surveying professional?

This was a lively dinner discussion topic.  What undergraduate courses would be required?  What would be the make up of a surveying curriculum; Engineering, GIS, Mathematics, Physics, Planning, Law?  In light of technological advances and management practices in today’s world, has the time come?  How would this be implemented into the profession over time?

Please Join Us for the September 15th Dinner Meeting Presentation:

“Ortho-rectification of Historic Imagery”, by Dave Brown of Pixxures Inc.

The presentation will be at our regular dinner meeting beginning at 6:00PM at Angelo’s Restaurant, 1830 130th AVE NE, Bellevue.  Dave will show how old aerial imagery can be brought back to life, today.  Maybe you are interested in where the river actually was in 1938?  Imagine if you could actually see “the way it used to be” in relation to today’s parcel boundaries.  The cost will be: $35.00 and includes dinner.

Please RSVP to Tim Leach (Tim.Leach@muckleshoot.nsn.us) (253.876.3323) by September 9th, 2005
